Subscription for the Prize "Ibni Oumar Mahamat Saleh"

A subscription of the international mathematical community, following the initiative of the Mathematical Societies of France, SFdS and SMAI and SMF.

The Prize "Ibni Oumar Mahamat Saleh" is created in memory of our colleague and to continue its commitment to Mathematics in Africa. The prize will be awarded annually to a young mathematician from Central Africa or West Africa. Applications will be evaluated by a scientific committee set up by ICPAM. It will fund a scientific visit.

More than 3000 people have signed the Petition on "Ibni Oumar Mahamat Saleh". We hope that many of you will contribute to the international subscription for the Prize "Ibni Oumar Mahamat Saleh".

Prize "Ibni Oumar Mahamat Saleh" (or Ibni Prize)

On February 3, 2008 Ibni Oumar Mahamat Saleh was kidnapped from his home in N'Djamena by the Chadian armed forces. He died presumably within the next few days, in detention. Ibni Oumar Mahamat Saleh was a professor and former rector of the University of N'Djamena. Former government minister, he was one of the leading figures of the democratic opposition in Chad. He was instrumental in inter-university agreements linking Chad to France and other African countries. He wanted these agreements contribute to the quality of teacher education in his country.

The French Society of Statistics (SFdS), the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SMAI) and the Mathematical Society of France (SMF) create an award in his memory to continue his commitment to quality training of young African mathematicians.

The Prize "Ibni Oumar Mahamat Saleh" will be awarded annually. It will allow a student of an institution of Central Africa or West Africa (*), in mathematics or statistics, at the graduate or post-graduate level, to benefit a scientific training in a country other than his/her own.

The visit will typically last three months. It will be done in a laboratory/department of Mathematics or Statistics. The host will be sufficiently well equipped so that the training can be done in satisfactory condition, under the guidance of an instructor. It is desirable to have a co-supervisor of the country of the student. The physical organization of the visit will be managed by the administration of the host laboratory or department.

The prize will be awarded annually, the first being launched on 1 October 2009. Each candidate has to submit a research project with a proposed home in a laboratory. The choice of the recipient will be made by a scientific committee set up by CIMPA.

A subscription is launched in order to fund the prize.
