Évariste Galois ou le roman du mathématicien (numéro spécial « E. Galois »)

Résumé :
Évariste Galois n'est pas seulement un acteur majeur de l'histoire des sciences, souvent dépeint dans des récits historiques et biogaphiques. Au cours du xxe siècle, il est aussi devenu un héros de roman, de nouvelles, de pièces de théâtre et de films. Les écrivains relevaient là une gageure : le sujet mathématique et la forme littéraire ne semblaient pas a priori être compatibles. Pour mieux décrire ces incompatibilités décrites par les écrivains entre des préceptes littéraires et des préceptes historiographiques, nous nous proposons d'étudier le traitement littéraire et romanesque de Galois (ou des figures qui en sont inspirées) dans les littératures française, allemande, anglaise et américaine et dans les oeuvres qui ont joué un rôle essentiel dans la métamorphose romanesque de Galois. L'analyse comparée de textes de Leo Perutz, Bruno Aberro, Leopold Infeld, Alexandre Arnoux, André Dalmas, Thomas Pynchon, Alexandre Astruc, Pierre Berloquin et d'autres montre que la frontière entre récits romanesques et historiques est perméable. Les genres fictionnels, comme les genres non-fictionnels ont contribué de la même manière à la transformation de la figure historique de Galois en un mythe et en une icone culturelle.

Abstract:
Évariste Galois or the Mathematician's Novel
Évariste Galois is not only a major protagonist of the history of mathematics, being frequently depicted in historical and biographical accounts. During the 20th century he also became a hero within fictional genres such as novels, short stories, plays and films. The literary writers had to meet specific challenges since the literary form and the mathematical subject do not easily converge. In order to describe the incompatibilities of the poetic and the historiographic requirements and approaches we give an account of the literary treatments of Galois (or his similes) in French, German, British, and US-American literature. The comparative analysis of texts by Leo Perutz, Bruno Aberro, Leopold Infeld, Alexandre Arnoux, André Dalmas, Thomas Pynchon, Alexandre Astruc, Pierre Berloquin, and others shows, that the boundary between the historical and the romantic narratives is permeable. Both the non-fictional and the fictional genres contributed equally to the transformation of the historical figure Galois into a myth and a cultural icon.
