Résumé :
Peu de mathématiciens gagnent leur place dans l'imaginaire collectif national. Laurent Schwartz est l'un d'entre eux. Toute sa vie il a appliqué la même rigueur et le même niveau d'engagement aux différentes facettes de son activité : il fut tout à la fois un grand mathématicien aux intérêts multiples, un professeur passionnant ses auditoires, un militant des droits de l'Homme, un citoyen engagé, et un homme de coeur. Les témoignages recueillis auprès de personnes d'origines très différentes qui l'ont bien connu, les documents de sa plume et les photographies rassemblées dans ce volume permettent au lecteur qui n'aurait entrevu qu'une seule de ces facettes de découvrir les autres.

Abstract:
Only few mathematicians are known to the general public at the national level. Laurent Schwartz is one of them. Throughout his life he was active in many different areas, always showing the same level of personal rigour and commitment. He was an outstanding and versatile mathematician, an inspiring teacher, a concerned citizen, a militant for human rights the world over, and a man who cared for others. This volume is a collection of testimonies of people who knew him, documents he produced, and many unpublished photographs. Hopefully, it will enable those who may have known him in only one particular context to discover the many other facets of his personality and activities.
